Building a No Kill Nation -
The Story of Mr. Nathan Winograd
♥♥♥♥♥♥

By Dallas Center, Texas USA (Originally in English)

Mr. Nathan Winograd, Director of the No Kill Advocacy Center, is determined to save the approximately five million dogs, cats, gerbils, hamsters, rabbits, etc. in the USA that are scheduled to be euthanized this year if they are not adopted.

From his very childhood, Mr. Winograd, influenced by his mother who loved cats, would help helpless animals, including a 6 week old kitten that became his beloved companion for the next 23 years.

As a Stanford University law student, Mr. Winograd was inspired by two authors: John Robbins, In “Diet of a New America” and Hans Ruesch in “Slaughter of the Innocents.” When school officials decided to eradicate feral (non-domesticated) cats on campus, Nathan joined forces with local caregivers to institute a program based on a humane Trap-Neuter-Release (TNR) philosophy, combined with inconspicuously placed feeding stations. Contrary to commonly held misconceptions, the feral population began to decrease over time as reproduction ceased and cats lived out their natural lives. By eliminating mating and other related consequences such as fighting, wandering, and the influx of newcomers, feral colonies stabilized and overall cat health and quality of life improved.

Mr. Winograd successfully developed his No kill animal shelters with the San Francisco and later the rural Tompkins County New York SPCA.   His efforts were so successful that in 2003, the national journal “Animal People” ranked Tompkins County the safest community in the United States with only 1.8 animals killed in the shelter for every 1,000 inhabitants, eight times less than the national average. During his three-year stay, not a single healthy or treatable animal was killed.

Mr. Winograd never accepts killing as a “solution” to the dilemma of homeless pets.  He says that pets have different problems that require different solutions. For example, newborn puppies and kittens, dogs with behavior issues, and injured or sick pets all need different types of care. However, all programs should have a direct life saving impact on the precious animals. Some of the programs which Mr. Winograd strongly supports are foster parents (people who temporarily take care of animals), and low cost spay and neuter programs, which will help to solve the problem of too many homeless animals.

Mr. Winograd is urging everyone to get informed, and then see what they can do to help build a No Kill Nation. For more info visit http://www.nokillsolutions.com.
