Formosa (*) is seen as simply a small, beautiful island in the Pacific Ocean; however, the government and its citizens’ great efforts have created miracles in economic and political matters of the island. As a result Formosans enjoy living in material abundance and democratic freedom.

Most noteworthy about the Formosans are the agricultural techniques used and shared with other countries. Starting from year 1959, the government and its people have been helping 81 countries in four global continents with constructing roads and rivers, turning wastelands into farmlands. By doing this Formosans have contributed greatly in helping eliminate poverty and keeping those countries continuously developing.

For instance, from 1960 to 1970, serious famines were widespread in many African countries, with countless people starving and dying. In order to help the starving people the United Nations promoted the activity, “Sending Food to Africa”. However, food supply was only a temporary measure to an ongoing problem. A more permanent solution was to provide assistance to the local inhabitants by showing them how to develop their agriculture so that they could be fully self-sufficient. Thus, Agriculture Technical Teams from Formosa were dispatched to assist the local people and farmers on cultivation techniques. For instance, the basin area of the Kou River in Burkina Faso in mid-Africa was originally full of weeds and nearly barren. The Formosan Agriculture Technical Teams shipped equipment such as sickles, hoes, concrete mixers, and so on, to mid-Africa and guided the local people helping them dig an irrigation ditch lasting for more than ten kilometers. It took three years to turn the barren area into farmland, and as a result more than one thousand farmers were able to settle down with their families and business.

In addition to providing technical support on agriculture, handicraft, flood prevention and water conservation engineering, the Formosan government also helped farmers to enlarge their productivity scale and reach the goal of transferring techniques for the continuing development of their countries. Further, the Formosan government launched a loan project for small-scale farmers in the Eastern area of the Caribbean Sea and Burkina Faso in Africa, so as to improve the local people’s living standard. Also, the Formosan government provided financial support to help the local children in Mongolia and three nations in the Eastern Caribbean Sea area to receive fundamental education and reduce the dropout rate. From 1998 up to now, more than 2,000 students on average benefit from this project per year.

The Formosan government also dispatched a Medical Team to Sao Tome, Principle Bilateral, Malawi, Chad, Burkina Faso, and other countries, providing them with assistance on medical equipment and technology. They also provided African countries with vitamins to improve the nutrition status for children in poverty. For those countries seriously short of medical resources due to the unavailability of transportation, the government provided them with the necessary medical facilities and equipment through special projects, such as “The Eastern Caribbean four Nations medical facility donation project.” In addition, the government provided the Tibetans in India with Mobile Clinic vehicles.

With regards to humanitarian acts, the Formosan government provides nations that are hit by disasters with emergency disaster relief aid and medical services. For instance, in 2001, El Salvador and Peru suffered from earthquakes. The Formosan government donated money and collaborated with technology support teams abroad to help these two countries with building reconstructions after the disaster.

In summary, Formosa may be small, but its compassion is boundless. Long before the nations worldwide cooperated to find out solutions to the problems of food shortage, AIDS and malaria outbreak, the Formosans had already given out their loving helping hands through Technical Teams, Medical Teams and non-government organizations, completely revealing the spirit of humanitarian caring.

 (*) In our News magazines we refer to Taiwan as "Formosa," (meaning beautiful)  because Master thinks that the name Formosa reflects more completely the beauty of the island and its people. Master feels that using this name brings spiritual elevation and luck to the land and its inhabitants.
